Stacking the Shelves/The Sunday Post

Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!
If you want to find out more about Stacking The Shelves, please visit the official launch page!

It's official! I have decided to hop on the oh so popular book blog memes! I wasn't sure if I would be able to do so many weekly memes, but then I decided to combine Stacking the Shelves and The Sunday Post into one so that I have some flexibility :) We'll see how it goes!

So this past week was a bit of a slow one for the blog, but I did still manage to pick up a few books!

Purchased myself:

                                                       Received an ARC from NetGalley:

And that's it! I bought Wolfsbane and Empire of Night to complete a series as I already own some of them (it drives me nuts when I don't have a full series on my shelf lol). I bought The Penelopiad because... my name is Penelope and I was intrigued at what Margaret Atwood's take on the greek myth would be! And the Lillian Marek book was bought on a whim because I recently read one of her books for the first time and was impressed. I'm hoping she becomes a new addition to my favorite authors list :)

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted @ Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog and showcase books and things we have received. Share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead. See rules here: Sunday Post Meme

Omigoodness what a slow week on my blog! I was so busy with school this last week that I just had so little time to read and get some posts together. This is the time of year when university students are bombarded with assignment due dates, midterms, papers, etc. and my school was no exception! I am actually waiting to hear back from medical schools right now, so this is a super stressful time! My books and blog are my only happy escape :) If things go the way I hope, I will be heading off to Ireland in August to begin my medical school journey. Put a prayer out for me!

Last Week on my Blog:

This Week on my Blog:

Monday: It's Monday! What Are You Reading?
Tuesday: The Breakup Plan by Elle Vaughn - Book Review
Wednesday: Can't Wait Wednesday
Friday: Book Blogger Hop
Saturday: If I finish my book in time, I am hoping to post a review of The Descent of the Drowned by Ana Lal Din
Sunday: Stacking the Shelves/The Sunday Post!

And that's it! I'm so happy to be including these memes on my blog, I think with a little bit of scheduling I should be able to get them all up each week! How is your reading week going everyone?

Penelope's Review

Wow. Just wow. I thought I loved the first book in the series... the second book puts the first one to shame lol! (jokes.. I loved both). Boy are we ever taken on a whirlwind of an adventure in this one. I didn't know whether to give it 10 stars or no stars and anyone who's read it will know exactly what I mean!

This book kept me engaged from start to finish. There was adventure, mystery, and intrigue at every turn of the page, and the character development was amazing - it far surpasses that seen in the first book, in my opinion. We got to see a new side of Cassandra, one more mature and confident than in the first book. She knew what she wanted and didn't care about the consequences of retrieving it. I loved this more daring approach to her character. Devyn was drool-worthy as usual. I was a bit annoyed at his reticence with Cassandra yet again but felt that it was true to his character. Seeing the moments of humility in him really kept me going. And the introduction of new characters was tastefully done.

I did find myself a bit confused when trying to map out the surrounding lands after they left Londinium. There were quite a few territories mentioned and described and I had a hard time keeping track of the important ones and the alliances between each. I would love a map of the country if Clara O'Connor ever decides to put one out!

This author is a master of cliffhangers and this book is no exception. She has an art for keeping readers on the edge of their seats, and leaving them wanting more... so much more.. when finishing her books. I am beyond excited to read the third and final installment in this series and I am most definitely a fan of this author for life. Very excited to see where she takes her writing career at the conclusion of this series, but I for one, will be first in line for whatever she comes out with!

That being said, I am giving this book 4.5 devils rather than 5, because that ending was so unexpected and left me feeling empty for days lol. I am sad, mad, and a whole host of other emotions (which speaks to the immense talent of this author) but in revenge, I am taking half a devil off ;) See you for another review when I get my hands on the final installment of The Once and Future Queen series!

Rating: 4.5/5 Devils!

This week's question:

Do you use Goodreads to keep track of your books?

Yes I do! When I re-started this blog a few months ago I went and cleared out my Goodreads entirely (I instantly regretted doing that...) so now I've started fresh with books as I read them, and books I want to read. I love having everything organized so Goodreads is fantastic for me!

The Stolen Kingdom: Jillian Boehme

Title: The Stolen Kingdom
Author: Jillian Boehme
Publish Date: March 2nd, 2021
Publisher: Tor Teen
Source: Huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC for review!

For a hundred years, the once-prosperous kingdom of Perin Faye has suffered under the rule of the greedy and power-hungry Thungrave kings. Maralyth Graylaern, a vintner's daughter, has no idea her hidden magical power is proof of a secret bloodline and claim to the throne. Alac Thungrave, the king’s second son, has always been uncomfortable with his position as the spare heir—and the dark, stolen magic that comes with ruling.

When Maralyth becomes embroiled in a plot to murder the royal family and seize the throne, a cat-and-mouse chase ensues in an adventure of dark magic, court intrigue, and forbidden love.

Penelope's Review

I enjoyed this book quite a bit more than I expected! I love that it's a standalone - I find it difficult to find good standalones these days. Everything is always getting dragged into trilogies or more, even when those that probably shouldn't lol!

I found this book to be fast-paced, exciting, and it had some great, unique aspects to the storyline! I love any story with magic, and this one did not disappoint. I have read reviews saying that the book seemed too rushed, but honestly I found it to be a breath of fresh air in a genre that often drags storylines on longer than they should. Could this book have been a duology? I mean yes, it could have but honestly I don't think it needed to be. The quick pace made for a fun, easy read with no room for boring. There was always something happening, and it gave off a good "can't put it down" kinda vibe.

The book was written from the perspective of both Maralyth and Alac, and I enjoyed reading from both points of view. I really loved watching Mara grow into the role of Queen. She started the book as a bit of a subdued, quiet character but with a fiery mind and over the course of the book, became a selfless leader who's courageous attitude made for a great role model. Alac was a great character right from the start. He was sweet and curious, and eager to have a life of his own outside of the influence of his powerful father and the stolen magic. He was instantly taken by Mara and it was great seeing their relationship grow as they got to know one another.

While the ending was not what I was hoping for, I think it fit the story perfectly. Any other ending would have been cliché (not that I mind cliché lol). Overall, I am really impressed with what the author came up with, and I look forward to trying anything she releases in the future!

This week's question is:

Is reading a fixed part of your morning or evening routine?

Usually, yes! I pretty consistently read before I go to bed each night. I rarely read anything in the morning as I am usually getting up 10 minutes before I have to leave my house lol! But I generally get at least some reading into every evening!

Siena Blake lost five million pounds and her long-time boyfriend on the same day. To add insult to injury, the whole thing ended making the London news. To escape, she takes a job in the Swiss ski resort of Le Miroir, where all she expects to do is work, ski, and eat lots of cheese and chocolate.

When Conor and Siena first meet, he’s determined to stay away. But when she’s caught in an avalanche, all of Conor’s protective instincts awaken and he realizes he’ll do anything to keep her safe.

It soon becomes apparent that all is not as it seems in Le Miroir. Could the peaceful ski resort prove a deadly trap for them both? Even if they can survive the dangers lurking, who will protect their hearts?

Penelope's Review

This is a nice, quick read with a decent storyline. While it was definitely enjoyable and made for a cozy afternoon, I found that there was very little buildup of the plot. I get that it is meant to be a short novella, but some aspects of the story felt rushed and a bit out of place. Character-wise, I think this book was spot on. I loved how strong and stoic Conor was, and how sweet and independent Siena was. I liked watching the two interact, and fall in love. I like the supporting character Luc as well! He seemed like such a sweetheart! I could definitely read a whole book based on him!

I think this could have been really fantastic if there was just a bit more explanation given for the various events scattered throughout. But overall, it was a great read for a cold afternoon or evening in. Can definitely be done in one sitting and the characters are fun to follow!

With her parents imprisoned, it’s up to Mica to investigate the terrorism involving Ceausescu and his nuclear business partners. Will revealing the truth to the world finally bring her the peace she seeks? Gift of Diamonds reveals hidden secrets of how Fascism led to Communism which began the seeds of modern-day Terrorism.

Penelope's Review

Wow. This is quite a powerful book. I'd like to commend the author for her exquisite use of the English language and her ability to seamlessly fuse fact with fiction in creating this world.

This book is outside of my usual go-to genres, as you may have noticed, but something about it made me realize I needed to read this book. I have long been fascinated by Romania and its cultures and traditions and perhaps that is why I decided to delve into the realm of historical fiction. Whatever it was, I can say that I am so glad I did. This book was a testament to the creative genius of Roberta Seret and her outstanding writing abilities.

The premise for the book was quite intriguing. It follows the story of a young girl, Mica, as she escapes from the communist regime of Ceausescu in Romania to the promising land of America. Once there, she does everything she can to rescue her parents from Romania and bring them to America with her. The book tells the story of how she gets from Romania to America and what happens once there, and everything in between in vivid detail. What I love about Seret's writing is that she was able to give so much detail and insight into each scene without ever slowing the book down or making it boring. I felt like was dancing right alongside Mica, feeling her emotions, struggling and persevering with her through each stage of her life.  It was both fascinating and disturbing to read about life under a communist regime. While I know that Seret mixed fact with fiction, I believe many of the lifestyle conditions she described were accurate. The book also tied in the horrors faced by Jews in Auschwitz and connected them to Romania's reign at the time, all of which is historical fact! I loved getting a glimpse of real history mixed with the fictional aspects.

In terms of characters, I enjoyed reading the book through the eyes of Mica. Mica is independent, strong-willed, and has a knack for survival. She faces challenges head-on and keeps going even when the odds are stacked against her. I felt scared when she did during her daring escape, hopeful when she did as she fought to get to America, and happiness with her when she finally achieved her dreams. I felt like her manner of speaking was true to her character as an immigrant and appreciated the author making her as authentic as possible. I wasn't sure how to feel about her uncle and aunt at first. But as the story evolved, they grew on me and I came to like them. The only piece that felt a bit unfinished to me was what Mica did with the knowledge she had on Ceausescu and his allies. There was quite a bit of attention brought to the conversations that Mica overheard during this book, but then we never really see what becomes of this information. There is discussion on whether or not she will divulge what she knows to the world, but I don't think that that ever actually happens. It's the only loose end I found, and I found it a bit odd that so much attention was given to this information but nothing was really done with it. This is a pretty minor detail however, and does not impact the enjoyment one gets out of reading this book.!

Overall, I found this to be a very powerful, compelling read. I feel that I have a better understanding of the history surrounding communism in Romania and Romania's connections to Nazi Germany. Even if you are not a lover of historical fiction, I encourage you to give this book a try! You may be surprised at how much you enjoy the journey alongside Mica. I am excited to see what happens next as the trilogy continues. Keep in mind that the three books do not have to be read in order as they are each focused on a different main character (though all main characters from each book become supporting characters in the others).

Rating: 4/5 Devils!

Penelope's Review

Bestill my historical romance loving heart. This was such a great book. Great characters, great storyline, great author!

So let's start with the plot! The main character, Kate, is sold to a man by her brother as a way of paying outstanding debts. She runs away to live with an aunt where she meets an assortment of characters, including our main male lead - the Duke of Ashleigh. This book was fast-paced and every page was exciting! I loved all of the twists and turns it took, and actually ended up finishing it within a day of starting! I really enjoyed Lillian Marek's writing style. It was elegant, true to the time period, and had enough flair to set it apart from other books of its kind. The only thing I can say about the writing of the book is that it switched to different characters' point of view at times. Had it just been between the two main characters, this would have been completely normal and expected but there were times when it jumped to a supporting characters' point of view which I found a bit odd. Not that it wasn't interesting to see what was going on in their heads, but this happened in the middle of chapters and was sometimes a bit confusing. This obviously didn't hinder my enjoyment of the book that much, however!

As for the characters themselves, Kate was a firecracker! I loved her spunk and attitude, especially when conversing with the duke. Their conversations had me laughing and rooting for them right from the start! Kate was definitely a strong, independent woman who knew what she wanted from life and was prepared to do whatever was necessary to make it happen. I loved her resilience and ability to cope with whatever was thrown at her with ease and a fiery grace. The Duke of Ashleigh AKA Peter, was equally as enjoyable. Yes, he could be a bit controlling at times but it was very obvious that he had nothing but good intentions. I loved how he was with Kate, and his very admirable sense of duty to his family name. And the supporting characters were great as well! Lady Talmadge and her daughter, the Mertons, Aunt Franny, etc. They were all great and well-placed in the story.

Overall, I found this book to be quite enjoyable and very tastefully written. I look forward to reading more by Lillian Marek in the future.

Rating: 4/5 Devils!
