Gilded by Marissa Meyer Book Review

Title: Gilded
Author: Marissa Meyer
Publish Date: November 2nd, 2021
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Source: Huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC for review!

Marissa Meyer, #1 New York Times-bestselling author, returns to the fairytale world with this haunting retelling of Rumpelstiltskin.

Long ago cursed by the god of lies, a poor miller's daughter has developed a talent for spinning stories that are fantastical and spellbinding and entirely untrue.

Or so everyone believes.

When one of Serilda's outlandish tales draws the attention of the sinister Erlking and his undead hunters, she finds herself swept away into a grim world where ghouls and phantoms prowl the earth and hollow-eyed ravens track her every move. The king orders Serilda to complete the impossible task of spinning straw into gold, or be killed for telling falsehoods. In her desperation, Serilda unwittingly summons a mysterious boy to her aid. He agrees to help her… for a price. Love isn't meant to be part of the bargain.

Soon Serilda realizes that there is more than one secret hidden in the castle walls, including an ancient curse that must be broken if she hopes to end the tyranny of the king and his wild hunt forever.

Penelope's Review

Marissa Meyer truly has a gift when it comes to reimagining the classics. I've never read a Rumpelstiltskin re-telling so I was beyond excited when I heard about this book. I was pleasantly surprised with the direction Ms. Meyer took this story, and loved the addition of the Erlking and the Hunt.

Serilda is the miller's daughter, touched long ago by Wyrdith, the god of stories, fortune, lies... and left with golden-wheeled eyes and an ability to spin stories that the children love but the adults shun her for. One night, in an encounter with the evil Erlking and his wild hunt, she tells a story about her ability to spin straw into gold. The Erlking is intrigued, which is most unfortunate for Serilda. He orders her to spin straw into gold for him in exchange for her life. With no one to turn to, Serilda is desperate. And then comes a boy. For a price, he will spin the straw into gold for her, and save her life.

This tale takes so many surprising turns, there's never a moment for boredom. Marissa Meyer has this fantastic ability to spin magic into every word and make you feel like you're right there in the story with her characters. I loved the creepy, dark aspects in this story, the tales of murder and entrapment. And yet, in the midst of all the darkness, I was hoping beyond hope for a happy ending for Serilda and Gild. Love and romance when all seems impossible and hopeless is just my kind of story. I'm looking forward to the second book in this duology - I can't wait to see what becomes of all these characters!

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a place to meet up and share what you have been, and are about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organize yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment and er… add to your groaning TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn here at The Book Date.

Happy Monday everyone! I hope everyone had a great weekend! I went on vacation the week before last, and here in Canada you have to quarantine for two weeks afterwards - so this is my last week of quarantine! Honestly, I have to say it's been quite a productive time so far lol! I've been reading books, catching up on shows, and working on my own novel for a writing competition!

Rules for Heiresses by Amalie Howard Book Review

Title: Rules for Heiresses
Author: Amalie Howard
Publish Date: October 26th, 2021
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Source: Huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC for review!

Sometimes, finding love means flouting the rules...

Born to a life of privilege, Lady Ravenna Huntley rues the day that she must marry. She's refused dozens of suitors and cried off multiple betrothals, but running away—even if brash and foolhardy—is the only option left to secure her independence.

Lord Courtland Chase, grandson of the Duke of Ashton, was driven from England at the behest of his cruel stepmother. Scorned and shunned, he swore never to return to the land of his birth. But when a twist of bad luck throws a rebellious heiress into his arms, at the very moment he finds out he's the new Duke, marriage is the only alternative to massive scandal.

Both are quick to deny it, but a wedding might be the only way out for both of them. And the attraction that burns between them makes Ravenna and Courtland wonder if it'll truly only be a marriage of convenience after all...

Penelope's Review

I believe this is part of a series, but like most in this genre it can easily be read as a standalone. The book follows Lady Ravenna, a smart, willful, and determined young woman who is eager for adventure and unwilling to be tied down by marriage. I really enjoyed her character - her strength was admirable, and her sharp tongue had me cheering her on from the beginning. On the other hand, we have Lord Courtland (love this name), a man who decides to make his own way in life after his family shuns him. Courtland is a bit of a closed wall - he keeps his emotions close to him and doesn't reveal too much out of fear.

Watching Ravenna and Courtland grow closer was an adventure in itself - I loved seeing her break down his walls, and loved watching him bring out the fire in Ravenna at every turn. This book had so many amazing tropes - childhood friends to lovers, disguised female lead, marriage of convenience, etc. It was a whirlwind with a great pace, and something new happening at every turn. I liked the different surprises that popped up with the other characters, it kept the story intriguing.

Overall, I thought this was a fun, unique historical romance. It's the first I've read by this author, but I'm looking forward to reading her other books now!

This Week's Question:

Would you ever consider dressing up as a book character? If so, which one? (submitted by Julie @ JadeSky)

Hmm... I'd like to say yes I absolutely would dress up as a book character - my only issue is what character. The thing with books is that characters come to life in your head in a way that is unique to each person. I don't think anyone would know what character I was unless it was super distinctive lol! Looking forward to seeing everyone's answer this week :)
