Can't Wait Wednesday #20

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally, they're books that have yet to be released.

Hello! This week I'm so excited to spotlight The Duke Who Loved Me! I just got this book on NetGalley - it was my first wish that's ever been granted! So exciting!

Title: The Duke Who Loved Me
Author: Jane Ashford
Publish Date: August 24th, 2021
Publisher: Sourcebooks

The Duke of Tereford is accustomed to getting his own way, but she's going to teach him a thing or two about love...

James Cantrell, the new Duke of Tereford, has inherited a dukedom in disarray and is overwhelmed by his unaccustomed responsibilities. Then he gets an idea. Cecelia Vainsmede served as liaison between James and her father, and she knows a great deal about business matters, his own in particular. She's also quite pretty. Ever the pragmatist, he suggests a marriage of convenience.

Cecelia has always been good at working with James, but she doesn't understand how he can be so obtuse. He clearly doesn't realize that he's the duke she's always wished for, or that his offer is an insult. But when a German prince arrives in London and immediately sets out to woo Cecelia, James will have to come to terms with what he really feels for her. Is running away worth the cost of losing her, or will the duke dare to win her once and for all?

Bestselling author Jane Ashford takes you to a dazzling Regency England you won't want to leave!

This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron

Title: This Poison Heart
Author: Kalynn Bayron
Publish Date: June 29th, 2021
Publisher: Bloomsbury YA
Source: Huge thank you to Raincoast Books and the publisher for providing me with an ARC for review!

Darkness blooms in bestselling author Kalynn Bayron's new contemporary fantasy about a girl with a unique and deadly power.

Briseis has a gift: she can grow plants from tiny seeds to rich blooms with a single touch.

When Briseis's aunt dies and wills her a dilapidated estate in rural New York, Bri and her parents decide to leave Brooklyn behind for the summer. Hopefully there, surrounded by plants and flowers, Bri will finally learn to control her gift. But their new home is sinister in ways they could never have imagined--it comes with a specific set of instructions, an old-school apothecary, and a walled garden filled with the deadliest botanicals in the world that can only be entered by those who share Bri's unique family lineage.

When strangers begin to arrive on their doorstep, asking for tinctures and elixirs, Bri learns she has a surprising talent for creating them. One of the visitors is Marie, a mysterious young woman who Bri befriends, only to find that Marie is keeping dark secrets about the history of the estate and its surrounding community. There is more to Bri's sudden inheritance than she could have imagined, and she is determined to uncover it . . . until a nefarious group comes after her in search of a rare and dangerous immortality elixir. Up against a centuries-old curse and the deadliest plant on earth, Bri must harness her gift to protect herself and her family.

From the bestselling author of Cinderella Is Dead comes another inspiring and deeply compelling story about a young woman with the power to conquer the dark forces descending around her.

Penelope's Review

This Poison Heart follows Briseis, a teenaged girl with a gift for growing plants! She isn't sure where this gift came from, or how to control it, but together with her moms she moves to an estate in the country to figure it out. The estate is left to her by aunt, and comes with what seems to be more questions than answers.

First of all, I want to say that the LGBT representation in this book, as well as the POC representation, was great! It's always refreshing to see a book explore new angles and push boundaries, getting away from the same old narrative. The premise was unique, and had really great potential, and I did love the Greek mythology aspects, but I had a few issues with it as well.

Unfortunately, this book didn't quite hit the mark for me.  I felt like the book dragged too much. It went pretty slowly throughout, and then all of a sudden the end threw a ton of information at me. Also, the time of day was written so oddly. There were times when a lot was happening, and then I was told that basically only a couple of hours had gone by. It's hard to explain, but it just didn't seem realistic and was kind of confusing.

In terms of characters, I liked the moms. They were funny and cute, and had so much love for Bri and for each other. Briseis herself was ok... I liked her well enough but there were times when she kind of annoyed me. The supporting characters were also alright - not great not terrible.

Ahhh I really did want to like this book, and I can definitely see the appeal, but I just didn't love it. I would give the second book a try, however. I am curious to see what happens and I hope that I like it more!

Stacking the Shelves/The Sunday Post #11

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted @ Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog and showcase books and things we have received. Share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

Wow! Just about into June! The pandemic makes time go by so slowly and yet so quickly at the same time. I wish there were new and exciting things going on in my life but... not really. It looks like I'm going to have to give medical school applications another shot unfortunately... but maybe second time is the charm lol? Technically I am still on the waiting list for Ireland, but the chances of getting a spot this late are pretty slim. But that's ok! Nothing in life comes easy, so it just means I need to work harder and try again. I just applied to a couple of medical offices this morning, it might be beneficial to start getting to know some doctors in the field! We'll see how it goes!
Anyway, let's move on to books and blogging!

The Long Walk by Richard Bachman/Stephen King

Title: The Long Walk
Author: Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman
Publish Date: July 1979
Publisher: Signet
Source: Purchased a copy myself

On the first day of May, 100 teenage boys meet for a race known as "The Long Walk." If you break the rules, you get three warnings. If you exceed your limit, what happens is absolutely terrifying.

Penelope's Review

I have not read too many books by Stephen King, but from what I have read and heard, I know that he is a brilliant writer. This book has only enhanced my opinion of his work. The Long Walk had been on my TBR list for quite some time, and I'm so glad I was finally able to set aside the time for it!

Stephen King seems to have a knack for being able to get inside people's heads and get them thinking beyond the superficial. I was amazed at how well he was able to articulate each character's thoughts, and how realistic he was able to make this storyline seem. The book follows 100 boys competing in the Long Walk where they basically have to walk 4 miles per hour or faster until there is only one left. They have 3 warnings, after which they are shot dead. They are able to lose the warnings, however, by walking for one hour without any further warnings.

Just imagine that... you have to walk, basically without stopping, going to the bathroom in front of thousands of people, not sleeping, rationing your food, etc. for days. Phew it really gets my mind rolling just thinking about it.

There are quite a few characters that we get introduced to, but I didn't find it confusing at all. I knew exactly who each character was, and that really just speaks to the skill of Stephen King. It's not easy to write so many characters without confusing/boring a reader so that was a really great aspect.

There's really not much I can say about this book, other than you should read it for yourself! You won't be able to understand the appeal this book holds until you are in the minds of the characters, walking with them, crying with them, fighting with them. I am still in a debate with my family over how long we could walk for without stopping lol... I am very intrigued and kind of want to try this out myself... minus the dying part haha! Give this book a try, you won't be disappointed!
