I love to read as much as I love to write. Here is a quick list of what I'm swooning over right now. Not necessarily my favorites of all time, but these are books I've read recently that I can't stop thinking about.
5. The Lord of the Rings - All of it. I love Peter Jackson's adaptations. I love rereading parts or all of the story regularly. I can't WAIT to see the new Amazon series as soon as I can carve out some time for TV. I quote Tolkein at least once a day, and especially during second breakfast. Frodo Lives!
4. Beasts of a Little Land by Juhea Kim - This book was recommended to me by a couple of people before it found me at a time when I was Korean history. The cover alone made me curious and the opening chapters about a desperate man hunting for his family had me hooked from the start. The book goes on to follow the lives of the man's son and a girl from a village in another part of Korea. They survive and at some times thrive during the Japanese occupation of Korea. The descriptions are beautiful, the story is a page turner, there is love, war, revenge, and redemption. What more could you ask for? Plus, I have a new list of places I want to visit in Korea and a new respect for the war torn history of the small, now divided, country.
3. The Map of Salt and Stars by Zeyn Joukhadar - Have you noticed a theme of far away places and survival yet? If not, here's your spoiler. This book is also beautifully written. It weaves the story of refugee girl fleeing Syria and an almost fairytale story of a girl on an adventure with a map maker 800 years before. The book is full of symbolism, heartache, and ultimately has a happy ending (for those of you who were worried) even though there are many trials along the way. What an amazing debut novel!
2. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami - This book isn't for everyone. It's a bit of a wild ride in a very strange place with some extremely unique characters. I couldn't put it down. I had to know what weird thing would happen next. It's clear while reading that most of the events and characters are symbols or even allegories, but I wasn't always sure if I was making the right connections. That sounds terrible as I write it, but it was actually fun and became a game. Bonus - they are hunting unicorns in a futuristic world! How cool is that?
1. On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous By Ocean Vuong - I am reading this book now. It's a series of letters from a boy to his mother. Vuong is also an award winning poet and it shows in every word of his writing. It's fast paced and tells the story in bits and pieces with lots of call backs and connections. I love epistletory novels like this, Ella Minnow Pea, and Dracula, but I have a feeling this one is going to stay with me for a very long time. My heart is already wound up in this little family. I can't wait to see where Vuong leads me next. Also, how cool is the name Ocean? So jealous.
Yes, these books are all on the literary/poetic side. I do read a lot of lighter fiction, including a lot of commercial YA, but my heart is in a deeper place right now. Sometimes I need an escape, and sometimes I need to experience what is going on around me with a fresh perspective. Don't be afraid to pick up something that you wouldn't normally read. Walk into the library and pick up the first thing that "calls" to you. You might be surprised. Also, read poetry. It's good for your soul.

of War, from Owl Hollow Press. Her essays, poetry, and short stories

Carolina Literary Review, and several anthologies.
Leigh has an MFA in Young Adult literature from Converse College where
she served as the Managing Fiction Editor at South 85 Journal for two
