The Highlander's Pirate Lass by Heather McCollum Book Review

Title: The Highlander's Pirate Lass
Author: Heather McCollum
Publish Date: August 23, 2021
Publisher: Entangled: Scandalous
Source: Huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a review copy!

Eliza Wentworth is no lady. After the notorious pirate Jandeau murdered her family, she vowed to spend the rest of her life at sea, saving others. She’d rather be firing cannons than embroidering pillows—or worse, bowing to the demands of a husband. But when she’s stranded on an island off the coast of Scotland, now she is the one in need of help. And, annoyingly, that help comes not only from a man, but a man she struggles to resist.

Highlander Beck Macquarie has never met a woman like Eliza. He hasn’t met many women, period, thanks to the blasted curse set upon Wolf Isle decades ago. To save the clan, he needs a wife and bairns, and rough-around-the edges Eliza is anything but wife material. She has no intention of staying once she’s able to set sail again. He should let her go. But the desire between them is impossible to ignore.

When she asks Beck to teach her the ways of the bedroom while she bides her time on his island, he can’t say no. As they learn more about each other, though, past trauma and secrets resurface. Now, Eliza must choose between the freedom and comfort of the only life she’s ever known and sacrificing it all to save the people she loves…including Beck.

Penelope's Review

This is the second book in The Brothers of Wolfe Isle series and follows Beck and Eliza. While I definitely enjoyed this book, I have to say it wasn't my favorite Highlander romance. Let's delve into the details!

So Beck is one of the Macquarie brothers and as such, is forced to endure the consequences of the curse placed on his clan. All of the Macquarie brothers have to discover what love is, get married, and have kids! No bastards allowed or the island will never be re-populated. Beck is such a great character - he's sweet and passionate, but he's not ready to settle down yet! When he meets Eliza Wentworth, he finds his attraction to her impossible to ignore.

Eliza is a terror on the sea and has earned her badass reputation after overcoming incredible hardships. She has no filter, saying exactly what's on her mind. I found her "unladylike" commentary hilarious most of the time. I enjoyed the connections formed between Beck and Eliza, but wasn't totally in love with their relationship. It had some good points, but also some meh points. I didn't find myself grasping onto every word they said to each other and hoping that it would all work out for the two of them. It was likeable, but not loveable.

The storyline itself had some interesting elements. The pirate element was a unique take for a historical romance, and I enjoyed it. The book moved along at a steady pace, and I was able to finish it pretty quickly. I definitely liked it, but it just wasn't my favorite McCollum book. I encourage you guys to give it a try though and form your own opinions!

EXCERPT FROM MY SOUL TO KEEP:

The man standing in the center of my office had a distinct otherworldly air about him. Not the I’m-a-supernatural air. Those were a dime a dozen here in the Fringe. No, this guy’s body was wreathed in menace and a very distinct I-am-not-of-this-world vibe.

I tightened my grip on my blade, grateful for the blocker, even though I wasn’t sure it would stop whatever mojo he was throwing. He seemed too large standing in my teeny office. His muscled, tattooed arms were trapped in a cream tee, eyes on the view outside my grimy window.

“Hey, you. How’d you get in?”

He blinked and turned to face me, giving me a full-on view of his face, the kind of face that said he did bad things but looked good while doing them. Dark eyes, straight dark brows, close-cropped dark hair, and a mischievous mouth.

I couldn’t get a lock on what type of supe he was, though. “What are you?”

“Bored of waiting. Business hours say 12-6 p.m.”

“Yeah, well, I was on business.”

He inhaled, then smirked. “I didn’t know you offered those kinds of services.”

So he could smell the sex on me. Big fucking deal.

“Keen sense of smell. My turn.” I sniffed the air. “You don’t smell demon, Lycan, or vamp. You don’t have the sweet tang of a fae, and you are most definitely not human.”

“My nature isn’t important, Nyx. All you need to worry about is how you’ll spend the money I’m willing to pay you.” His mouth tipped up in a smile that had too much of a cocky edge to it for my liking.

The only person who got to be cocky in my office was me.

The Christmas House by Victoria James Book Review

Title: The Christmas House
Author: Victoria James
Publish Date: September 7th, 2021
Publisher: Alcove Press
Source: Huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC for review!

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Victoria James is back with a heartwarming story about three generations of women trying to reconcile for the holidays.

It's Christmas in the small town of Silver Springs which is bursting with holiday spirit. The downtown shops boast twinkling lights, and the town square features an enormous Christmas tree. Every Christmas Eve for the past fifty years, Ruby Harris, the owner of the historic B&B, The Christmas House, has opened her doors to strangers in need, showing them the compassion once denied to her.

When Ruby invites her family home for the holidays, including her two adult grandchildren, Charlotte and Olivia, she hopes they will be able to put the past behind them. However, her plans for reconciliation implode as the women unravel secrets from the past that force them to confront the impact they've had on their dysfunctional family. As Charlotte grows closer to Wyatt, the neighbor next door and a friend from the past, old memories resurface that the women would rather forget. they're reminded of a man they want to forget.

As the clock inches closer to the New Year, can the magic of the season bring the family closer? Or will a surprise guest threaten their tentative truce and test newly formed bonds?

This light-hearted Christmas tale draws inspiration from Victoria James's own historical fixer-upper, offering plenty of warmth and holiday cheer.

Penelope's Review

Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year and I am ALWAYS down for a Christmas book regardless of the time of year! So when I saw this up for grabs, I could not have been more excited! The Christmas House ended up being just as sweet and warm and full of holiday cheer as I was expecting, so I'm very happy! It's also the first book I've read by this author, and I definitely liked her writing style. I look forward to reading more of her books!

The Christmas House is a dual timeline book - we have present time focused on our main characters, Charlotte and Wyatt, and the past focused on Charlotte's grandmother Ruby. I find that dual timeline books can be hit or miss in my opinion, but I am happy to report that this one was definitely a hit! I loved learning more about Ruby and her early life, and all the obstacles she had to overcome in getting to where she is now. I also enjoyed reading about Charlotte in the present and learning about how her past shaped her into the person she is. The connection between her and Wyatt from past to present was heartwarming and made for a great storyline!

All supporting characters were written really well, and I felt like I got to know each and every one of them in their own unique way. I loved the family drama, and having everyone get together for the holidays while working through their past was such an emotional journey.

Overall, this is a great option for a quick, fell-good read full of holiday cheer and baked goods lol :) Great pick for getting into the holiday mood!

Penelope's Review

I don't usually pick up anthologies, but something about this one drew me in, and I'm so happy I gave it a try! I have never read a historical erotic book, but I absolutely LOVE historical romance so this was FANTASTIC for me. It was so cool to see such steamy stories set in a time when talking to a man alone might ruin you lol!

I found the writing style to be flawless, props to this anonymous author for that. There really was something for everyone here, every taste, every inclination, every fantasy. And none of the stories felt unfinished - they all wrapped up nicely which is not always the case with short stories so I was pleasantly surprised by that.

All in all, I recommend this book to anyone who's looking for a HOT, sexy read filled with great representation and set in a historical time period! I don't think anyone will be disappointed as there is literally something that floats everyone's boat lol.

Age category: Young Adult/ New Adult
Release day: 26 July 2021

Blurb:
A mate bond is stronger than any other force in the world.

At least, that's what they say.

But what Titus and I have is... unique. Especially as, even though we'd been reborn so many times, the dragon has never had a mate. No one knows what to expect.
Outside of that, everything with Damen, Julian, and Miles is not all fun and games. Things are different now, and while that's natural, I'm not entirely sure I'm ready to make that next level of commitment.
However, we might not have a choice.

When Titus's investigation ramps up, becoming entangled with my debut case, I've run out of all other options. The reality is, my usual methods of coping won't work anymore. But to live is to grow, and to change.

GUEST POST:

The Reading Devil: How did you decide to become an author in the paranormal/supernatural genre. What drew you to this genre over all the others?

Lyla: Hi everyone, thanks so much for having me today! Growing up, I’ve always loved the paranormal genre—and the paranormal in general. I’m from Baltimore and grew up in Gettysburg, so I’d always been fascinated by haunted locations, ghost hunting, witchy things, and energy work. And in my fictional pursuits (of which there were many, since I have always been an avid reader) I always loved reading ghost stories and the supernatural. One of my first ghost series that I still adore to this day is The Mediator series by Meg Cabot. When I decided to write, which was mostly a stress-relief and therapeutic exercise, I had to add in a paranormal flare. I love reading contemporary, and watching it, but, when I write, my imagination tends to run wild and before I know what’s happening, everything has a magical purpose.
  EXCERPT:
The farther I walked, the fewer homes I saw. The woods thickened. Eventually, the sidewalk ended and street lamps vanished. At this point, I could only see the occasional mailbox at the end of a dirt driveway for homes that were far back off the road.
My map application was telling me that I was in the right place, but could there really be a meeting out here in this remote location? It didn’t seem likely.
Unless, Dr. Stephens had faked his background check somehow. It was entirely possible he had lured me out here to murder me.
I was about to turn back when the sound of an approaching motorcycle startled me from my thoughts. Suddenly, it became vital for me to remain unseen. But of course, I wasn’t so lucky. My heart raced as the motorcycle pulled to a halt behind me.
“Hey you,” a man called. His tone was commanding, though not unkind. But I’d already almost reached my stress limit for the day and the threat of confrontation froze me with terror.
I peeked over my shoulder, unsure of what to do. My already racing heart accelerated as my vision took in the newcomer. The beginning of every horror movie I’d ever watched flashed through my mind.
It was hard not to notice his imposing stature. But as he removed his helmet and shook his head, it was even more impossible to not be entranced by his long, silky locks as they fell gently around his chiseled face.
His movements mesmerized me, and I couldn’t seem to pull my gaze away as he used a glove-covered hand to slowly flip his hair back over his shoulder. He was wearing a torn, plaid shirt, extremely faded jeans, and a few days’ worth of stubble, and the look worked for him.
I was an idiot, admiring the person who was probably going to kill me. Then again, it was impossible not to watch him. He was so gorgeous that I could almost hear a choir of angels harmonizing in the background. His physique was molded from God himself. His face was perfect seduction. I wanted nothing more than to explore every inch of his smooth, olive skin.
I wasn’t stupid. No one that beautiful had good intentions. This was clearly a trap. Much as it normally was in the way of natural selection. This must be how he distracted his victims: dazzling them with his looks. I was certain, because despite all the above, something about this guy screamed danger.
There was something off about him. This was as certain as coffee was the greatest beverage known to mankind.
“Do you need any help? This isn’t the greatest place for a beautiful young woman like yourself to be wandering around alone.” His large green eyes twinkled as he grinned at me, showing off his perfect teeth and adorable dimples. Despite his friendly words, my breath caught. A familiar warning rang in the back of my mind.
Yes, unless I did something drastic, I probably would end up dead. I couldn’t let a lumberjack kill me. That would just be ridiculous.
“I’m all right, but thank you,” I somehow managed to say. I was barely able to look at him anymore. I’d had just about enough of strangers for the day, and I hadn’t even made it to my destination. There was no choice but to move forward; I couldn’t turn back, now that he was there.
Maybe if I ignored him, he’d go away.
“Why are you out here?” His deep, melodious voice drifted after me like a caress. I took the risk to glance back again and almost fell to the gravel.
He had gotten off of his bike and was strolling after me as he pushed it beside him.
…Was this for real?
I could probably outrun him, if I had to. I was fast. Despite his attractiveness, he didn’t look well off. I doubted that he’d be stupid enough to leave the expensive-looking bike behind just to chase me.
There was also the possibility that I was wrong. Perhaps he was a good Samaritan—albeit a persistent one. If he was going to kidnap me, wouldn’t he have done so already?
I slowed down, giving him a wary look. He couldn’t be planning on following me the whole way, could he?
He grinned, realizing that he had regained my attention. “I’m just curious. We don’t get strangers in this part of town. There’s nothing out this way except private residences and trees.”
My anxiety rose as I fought to maintain composure. There wasn’t a reason for him to smile during this discussion. He was totally preying on me. And his words, wasn’t that the same as him saying that no one would ever find my mutilated body?
I had to do something. I discreetly searched my purse until I held the tiny can of pepper spray. I was ready. If this guy tried anything—if he even tried to touch me—he would never know what hit him.
“You didn’t answer, angel. Where are you headed?” He continued to trail after me, managing to become more persistent with every passing moment. “I can walk you there, just to make sure you’re safe.”

I stopped walking entirely—I certainly couldn’t show up at Damen’s with this interloper in tow. “I’m seriously fine.” I tried to reassure him in my nicest voice. To show no fear. “You don’t need to bother with me. Besides, I don’t even know who you are.”
“It’s not a bother at all.” He flashed another blinding smile. “And I guess I should introduce myself. It’s a good thing to be wary of strangers. My name is Titus Ducharme. You might have heard of me; I own Jinshu Security.”
Never heard of it. I pursed my lips, listening to him continue on. If anything, I was even more suspicious now. I highly doubted that this man was the owner of anything resembling a respectable corporation. He was far too young and too wild.
Titus—if that was his real name—didn’t seem to notice. “I’m perfectly legit. You can ask my assistant. But I can’t tell you how happy it makes me when I see a young woman asking questions. You have a good head on your shoulders, it would be remiss of me to not see you to your destination.”
I raised a brow skeptically, unable to come up with a response. He thought I was smart because I asked a question? It almost sounded as though he was making fun of me.
“Let me take a guess and say that you are headed…” He glanced up and pointed in the direction that I had been walking when he pulled up. “…that way. What a coincidence! I’m going that way as well, so this works perfectly. I’ll escort you.”
I wasn’t sure how to respond. He was being so stubborn. It was time to take some action.
He had at least a foot-and-a-half on me and over a hundred pounds of muscle. I had no chance in hand-to-hand combat. There was only one thing for a woman like me to do in this situation.
Yet, despite my fear, I felt guilty. “Titus—”
He grinned warmly as I said his name, as if he loved hearing the sound. The action made me feel even worse for what I was about to do.
I’d give him one more chance.
“I’m seriously fine.” I leveled my most severe glare in his direction, in case he was just a persistent dude with no clue. “You can leave now, please.”
He sighed as he rubbed the back of his head, clearly uncomfortable. “I don’t think that you understand. These streets…I can’t just leave you here alone. I really should—”
Titus didn’t see it coming. The second he refused to leave, I pulled out the weapon and aimed the pepper spray right at his eyes.
Once I had downed the attractive stalker, I ignored his screaming and took off like a bat out of hell.
I had only this chance. According to the maps, I was close to my destination. Between my speed and Titus’s temporary incapacitation, hopefully he wouldn’t catch up to me before I reached safety.
